On January 10th, 2025, Dustin Hogan, a Registered Therapeutic Counselor and the founder of Therapy For Dudes, took to the TEDx stage in Vancouver to address a topic that is often left in the shadows: men’s mental health. His talk, The Silent Crisis of Men’s Mental Health, resonated with many, opening up a conversation that has long been silenced.

Men are often seen as strong, tough, and unshakable, but many are quietly struggling with their mental health—too afraid to speak up. In his talk, Dustin pointed out how society’s pressures, the stigma around mental health, and the expectations placed on men can make it hard to open up. From a young age, many of us are taught to just “tough it out,” which leaves them facing challenges like anxiety and depression on their own.

Dustin’s message was clear: and that it was time for a change. With Therapy For Dudes, he’s made a place where men like us can chat openly without worrying about being judged or feeling weak. The days of holding everything in are over. The truth is, everyone—no matter who they are—needs a little support when it comes to their mental health. Dustin’s TEDx talk was an important reminder that it’s important for men to reach out and look after themselves.

Breaking the Silence

Mental health issues are universal, but we men are often disproportionately affected by the reluctance to seek help. According to various studies, men are less likely to seek therapy than women, despite experiencing similar or even higher levels of distress. We are far less likely to talk openly about our struggles, whether it’s with a family member, a friend, or a professional. This disconnect from emotional support can lead to more severe consequences, including substance abuse, relationship problems, and even suicide.

Dustin Hogan’s TEDx speech shed light on this issue, and in doing so, he reminded everyone that it is okay for men to ask for help.

“The stigma around men’s mental health is killing us.”

He continued, “The stigma that us men must always appear strong, unemotional, and self-reliant…asking for help as a man is to admit weakness”. This stigma, Dustin emphasized, has created a “silent crisis” that is affecting many men, and it’s time to change that.

Therapy doesn’t make you weak—it makes you stronger. Opening up is a step towards healing, not an admission of defeat. His talk wasn’t just about addressing mental health in general; it was about providing a voice to men who have often felt silenced, ignored, or misunderstood in the mental health conversation.

The Benefits of Men’s Counselling Online

One of the most significant barriers for many men seeking therapy is the fear of being judged or not knowing where to begin. Fortunately, online men’s counselling has made seeking help more accessible, private, and convenient than ever before. It allows you to connect with trained professionals in a comfortable and secure setting, whether from the comfort of your home or on the go.

With online counselling, there are no in-person appointments to schedule, no long commutes, and, importantly, no need to step into an office where you may feel vulnerable.

“When my desire to heal became more important than my need to appear strong, my healing could finally begin.”

It’s a discreet and flexible option for you to start your mental health journey without feeling overwhelmed by the traditional therapy setting. Through men’s counselling online, you can receive the same high-quality therapy they would in person but with the added benefit of flexibility and privacy.

“Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness.”

At Therapy For Dudes, we understand the unique challenges men face when it comes to mental health. Our online counselling services are here to provide a safe space for men like you to discuss your feelings, gain clarity, and work towards mental well-being.

“When we share our stories and we listen to the stories of others, silence actually shifts to opportunity. An opportunity to grow, an opportunity to heal, an opportunity to become better men.”
